Why a Final Fantasy 6 Remake Isn’t Happening Anytime Soon, According to Yoshi-P

Don't hold your breath for a modern, multi-game overhaul of Final Fantasy 6. Speaking on stage at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, series veteran Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) explained why giving the SNES classic the Final Fantasy 7 Remake treatment is far easier said than done.

Joining Yoshida on stage was Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the FF7 remake trilogy, who kicked off the discussion by naming FF6 as the most influential game of his life—while quickly adding a massive caveat.

"Every time I give that answer to a journalist... the next day there’s an article online saying ‘Hamaguchi will be remaking Final Fantasy 6,’" Hamaguchi joked through a translator. "So I also say ‘no, I am not’ at the same time."

Yoshida backed him up, emphasizing that while fan demand is undeniable, the sheer scope of FF6 makes the logistics of a full-scale remake daunting.

“Look at Final Fantasy 6. It’s such an incredibly huge game,” Yoshida explained, noting that the same logic applies to other fan favorites like FF8 and FF9. Addressing Hamaguchi directly, he pointed out that matching the modern production values of the FF7 project for a game like FF6 would be an enormous undertaking: "If we did remake those other titles, we’d probably end up having to release them in four installments, or maybe even five installments.”

Lightning in a Bottle

Scale isn't the only hurdle—burnout and team retention are just as challenging. With the third entry in the FF7 trilogy—Final Fantasy 7 Revelation—slated for release next year, Hamaguchi reflected on how rare it is to keep a development team together for a decade-long initiative.

“They’ve stuck with me for over 10 years working on three separate games... and there’s not many that would do that,” Hamaguchi said. He admitted that trying to swap out development teams between titles would have made the trilogy nearly impossible to execute. "It’s a miracle that we were able to get these people willing to stick around and keep up the motivation... That’s why I can’t just sit here and go ‘yeah, yeah, I’ll remake 6,’ because it’s not quite that easy.”

This isn't the first time Yoshida has thrown cold water on sprawling remake requests. Back in 2024, he noted that Final Fantasy 9 couldn't realistically be remade as a single game either—adding that if he personally got to choose any entry to remake, his pick would actually be Final Fantasy 3.
