Generous Free Trial Details
Square Enix has brought its expanded Free Trial to Nintendo’s hybrid console, offering access to the base game (A Realm Reborn) alongside three major expansions: Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers.
-
Requirements: Players need both a Nintendo Switch Online account and a Square Enix account to play. A paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required.
-
Limitations: The trial caps character progression at Level 80 and restricts access to full multiplayer features, PvP, and Ultimate Raids.
-
Storage Warning: The installation requires 117.2GB of storage space—outlining a significant footprint even on the console’s built-in 256GB storage.
Subscription Terms and Launch Discount
To smooth the launch rollout, Square Enix is waiving subscription fees for approximately one month following release. After this initial window expires, registering a new platform grants the standard 30-day free play period before a paid recurring subscription becomes necessary.
Note on Platform Licenses: Playing on Switch 2 requires a platform-specific subscription. However, players holding active subscriptions on other platforms (such as PC or PS5) qualify for a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription fee.
Purchase Options & Restrictions
Downloading the Free Trial must be done before purchasing a full edition, as registering any paid Switch 2 edition immediately disqualifies the account from trial access.
For those ready to buy, both versions of the Complete Edition are discounted by 30% through Thursday, August 13, 2026, bringing the entry price down to $41.99 / £31.49 (normally $59.99 / £44.99).
