Super Dungeon Tactics Review: Deep Strategy That Falls Just Short

January 7, 2019

Super Dungeon Tactics is a great tactical game that combines strategic battles with a colourful, cartoony presentation. Its approachable style makes it easy to jump into, while the tactical systems give you enough depth to keep each encounter interesting.

It is also the kind of game you can easily sink a lot of hours into. With plenty of battles, character progression, and different ways to approach each situation, Super Dungeon Tactics offers a surprisingly addictive experience for fans of turn-based strategy.

Graphics 7.0

The graphics in Super Dungeon Tactics are clean, crisp, and easy on the eyes. The cartoony art style fits the tone of the game well and gives the characters and environments plenty of personality.

There is nothing particularly spectacular about the visuals, but they do their job effectively. Everything is clear during battles, the presentation is consistent, and the overall look remains charming throughout the experience.

Gameplay 7.5

The gameplay in Super Dungeon Tactics offers a surprising amount of tactical depth. Each round introduces Ability Dice that can boost character stats or unlock special skills, adding an element of unpredictability while still giving you plenty of control over how each battle plays out.

You can choose which hero acts next, allowing you to plan attacks, set up combinations, and react to changing situations on the battlefield. The Aggro system adds another layer of strategy by letting you manage which characters enemies are more likely to target, while the loot-based progression system gives you plenty of freedom to swap equipment between heroes and experiment with different builds.

The campaign also mixes things up with multi-part quests that can require you to split your team across different areas and complete more complex objectives. There are plenty of options available, and the systems can become surprisingly deep without feeling impossible to understand.

Overall, the gameplay is strong and offers a good amount of strategic variety, but despite all of its mechanics, it still feels like something is missing that could have pushed the experience to another level.

Audio 8.1

The soundtrack in Super Dungeon Tactics is quite good and adds plenty of personality to the adventure. Composed by Wesley Slover, the music features a nice variety of tracks that complement the different environments, battles, and situations throughout the game.

The variety helps prevent the soundtrack from becoming repetitive, with certain tracks doing an especially good job of enhancing key moments. Overall, the audio fits the cartoony tactical style nicely and helps give the game some extra energy and atmosphere.

Value 8.4

The value in Super Dungeon Tactics is quite good, especially for players who enjoy tactical games with plenty of content to work through. The main story takes around 25 hours to complete, while playing through additional side content can push that closer to 28 hours.

Players looking to complete everything can expect roughly 40 hours of gameplay, giving the game a decent amount of replay value and plenty of reasons to keep coming back.

The additional content definitely adds to the overall package, although the main story itself is nothing particularly special. Even so, the amount of gameplay on offer makes Super Dungeon Tactics a solid value overall.

Pros

- Great overall value with plenty of hours to sink into the game.
- A strong SRPG experience with plenty of tactical options and different ways to approach battles.
- Good replay value for players who want to complete additional objectives and content.
- Excellent soundtrack with a nice variety of tracks.
- Plenty of character and equipment combinations to experiment with.

Cons

- The gameplay is enjoyable overall, but some mechanics still leave a little to be desired.
- Despite having plenty of tactical systems, the experience can sometimes feel like it is missing something.
- The graphics could have used more detail and polish.
- The main story is serviceable but not particularly memorable.

Verdict

Super Dungeon Tactics is a strong tactical RPG with plenty of depth, a good amount of content, and enough variety to keep battles interesting throughout the campaign. Its flexible turn order, loot-based progression, Ability Dice, and different character setups give players plenty of ways to experiment, while the excellent soundtrack helps give the adventure its own personality.

At the same time, the game never quite reaches its full potential. The gameplay is good but still feels like it is missing an extra layer that could have made it truly stand out, while the graphics could have benefited from more detail and polish. The main story also does little to elevate the experience.

Overall, Super Dungeon Tactics is a good SRPG with strong value and enjoyable tactical systems. It may not be one of the best games in the genre, but there is still plenty here for strategy fans to enjoy.
